A headless storefront separates what the customer sees from the system that runs commerce. The front end is its own application. It fetches products, prices and carts from your commerce platform through an API and pulls content from a CMS. Checkout, orders and inventory stay with the platform.
The result is a store you can shape exactly as you want. Pages can be fast because you control every script. Content can be as rich as your brand needs. The trade-off is that you now own an application, with its own code, hosting and release process.
What goes into a build
- Front-end application. Built in NextJS with server rendering and caching, so pages load quickly and are fully readable by search engines.
- Commerce connection. Product, cart and customer data from Shopify Plus, BigCommerce or Saleor through their storefront APIs, with checkout handled by the platform.
- Content. A headless CMS wired in so editors build landing pages and stories without a developer.
- Search and merchandising. Product listing, filtering and search connected to your catalog or a dedicated search service.
- Tracking. Analytics and conversion events built into the app, since platform pixels do not run on a custom front end.
Hosting and release
We usually deploy to Vercel or Netlify, which run NextJS well and give every change a preview link before it goes live. We set up environments, automated checks and monitoring so releases are routine rather than nerve-racking. Performance budgets are agreed early and checked on every release, so the speed you launch with does not erode as features are added.
When it makes sense
Headless is worth it when the experience is a real advantage for your brand, when content and commerce need to blend closely or when theme limits keep blocking the roadmap. If a well-built theme would do the job, we will tell you, because it is cheaper to run. Some brands land in between, keeping the theme for most of the store and going headless only for content-heavy sections.
We deliver this through our composable and headless commerce service. For Shopify-specific builds see Shopify Plus headless builds, and for the wider architecture see composable commerce development.
