Composable commerce is an approach where the store is assembled from separate services connected through APIs. The commerce engine handles products, carts and orders. A headless CMS handles content. Search, reviews, payments and the front end are each their own piece. Any of them can be swapped out later without starting over.
It is not the right answer for every brand. A single platform is simpler and often enough. Composable earns its cost when your business has requirements a single platform cannot meet, or when the parts of your stack need to change at different speeds. A brand selling omnichannel direct-to-consumer, B2B and retail across several markets often reaches that point sooner than a single-channel store.
What we build
- Architecture. Which services you need, how they talk to each other and which one owns each piece of data.
- Commerce engine. Shopify Plus or BigCommerce used headlessly, or an open source engine such as Saleor where you need more control.
- Content and search. A headless CMS for editors and a search service for product discovery, connected to the catalog.
- Integration layer. The glue between services and back-office systems such as ERP and order management.
- Front end. A custom storefront, usually built in NextJS, that brings it all together for the customer.
Keeping it manageable
The common failure with composable is ending up with more moving parts than the team can run. We keep the number of services as low as the requirements allow, choose managed products over self-hosted ones unless there is a reason not to, and document how each part is deployed and monitored. Your team should be able to explain the stack without us in the room.
We also avoid building everything at once. Most projects start with the services that remove the biggest constraint, go live, then add the rest in stages so the business sees value early and risk stays contained.
Composable is also a strong base for AI. Agents work best when every capability sits behind a clean API, as explained in why AI agents need composable commerce architecture.
This work is part of our composable and headless commerce service. Related builds include headless storefront development, headless CMS implementation and Saleor development.
