commercetools is the enterprise end of headless commerce. Founded in Germany in 2006 and a founding member of the MACH Alliance, it delivers catalog, pricing, promotions, carts, orders and inventory as APIs, with no storefront attached. Its platform, now called Sphere, covers B2C, B2B and in-store selling, with tools for agentic commerce.
We use it when the business needs more than a SaaS platform's data model allows. Several brands, regions or business units on one commerce core, contract pricing that differs by account, or a catalog that has to feed stores, apps, marketplaces and AI agents at once. We model the catalog, pricing and markets first, build the front end with a headless CMS like Contentstack, and connect the ERP and order management behind it.
It is built for enterprise scale and needs a team to own it after launch. For many mid-market brands Shopify Plus or Commerce Layer covers the same ground for less, and a build vs buy assessment is the cheaper place to find that out. Our composable commerce development work covers both paths.
