What is Saleor and how is it different from Shopify?

Saleor is an open source, API first commerce platform you host and extend yourself. Shopify hands you a working store and asks you to work within it. Saleor hands you the building blocks and asks you to assemble them. You take on more responsibility and get far fewer constraints in return.

When does open source commerce make sense over SaaS?

When your business logic is the product. If your pricing, fulfilment or customer model is genuinely unusual and it is how you compete, fighting a SaaS platform costs more over time than building on an open one. If your commerce is fairly standard, SaaS is the cheaper answer.

Who maintains a Saleor build after launch?

Someone has to, and that is the honest trade. There is no vendor pushing updates to your store for you. Brands run this well either with an internal engineering team or a long term agency relationship. If neither is on the table, a hosted platform is the safer choice.

Is Saleor suitable for a mid-market brand?

It can be, but it is not the default. It fits mid-market brands with real technical capability and a model that hosted platforms handle badly. For a brand of the same size running conventional DTC, the flexibility is cost without benefit.

How long does a Saleor build take?

Longer than a SaaS build, typically five to nine months for a mid-market launch, because more of the system is yours to define. The upside is that the second and third years cost less, since you are not paying to work around platform limits.
